Where the Mysteries of Autism are Revealed One Story at a Time

Italian court reignites contentious autism-vaccine debate

Landmark ruling in Italian case finds that autism was caused by vaccine. A forensic scientist appointed by the judge to independently advise the court found that "in the absence of any other pre-existing conditions" it is a "reasonable scientific probability" that the child's autism can be "traced back to the administration of the MMR vaccine ...  by the health authority." And... his findings were endorsed by two other well-respected doctors.

Journal of Leukocyte Biology

I have long said that autism is related to the immune response . . . . there's lots of studies out there on the relationship and this is a great one....

"Recently, increasing research has focused on the connections between the immune system and the nervous system, including its possible role in the development of ASD. These neuroimmune interactions begin early during embryogenesis and persist throughout an individual’s lifetime, with successful neurodevelopment contingent upon a normal balanced immune response. Immune aberrations consistent with a dysregulated immune response, which so far, have been reported in autistic children, include abnormal or skewed T helper cell type 1 (TH1)/TH2 cytokine profiles, decreased lymphocyte numbers, decreased T cell mitogen response, and the imbalance of serum immunoglobulin levels. In addition, autism has been linked with autoimmunity and an association with immune-based genes including human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DRB1 and complement C4 alleles described. There is potential that such aberrant immune activity during vulnerable and critical periods of neurodevelopment could participate in the generation of neurological dysfunction characteristic of ASD."

Immune Disorders and Autism

Article from the NY Times (Aug. 25, 2012) showing research has found a link between the immune response and autism.  That immune response is what is triggered when receiving a vaccination . . . . which is discussed in this excellent article.

Study Links Neuroligin Gene Mutations to Oxidative Stress

Neuroligin - a synaptic protein may be mutated causing synapses to fall apart.  This mutation can be caused by environmental factors - such as thimerasol.

"Starting in 2003, a series of studies showed that some individuals with ASD have mutations in genes coding for proteins called "neuroligins" that are involved in the formation of synapses (connection between nerve cells). Since then, mutations of different synapse-related genes have been reported by several investigators using different families of affected individuals. These findings set the stage for the now generally accepted hypothesis that ASD may fundamentally involve alterations in synaptic structure and function."

"To their surprise, the worms showed a heightened response to the toxic effects of agents that cause or increase oxidative stress, such as copper, paraquat and thimerosal, suggesting that the worms may already be under oxidative stress by virtue of having the neuroligin mutation. The mutants also had increased levels of oxidative damage to their proteins".

Funny - I have thought this for 20+ years!  Remember the story where I talked about pruning the dendritic tree?  Yep, this I see hope for!  It really combines the behaviors, the genetic component, the thimerasol and neurological damage to synapses.

Understanding Autism

Gene research may help explain autistic savants

From MIT NEWS: "Mice lacking a certain brain protein learn some tasks better but also forget faster, according to new research from MIT that may explain the phenomenon of autistic savants in humans. The work could also result in future treatments for autism and other brain development disorders". Read Gene Research May help Explain Autistic Savants.

Vaccine schedules, Autism rates, and under 5 mortality

Why is it the United States has the highest number of vaccines given to children (by far) than any other country, the highest autism rates (again, by far) than any other country, and rank a low 34th in the world for child mortality rates?   Take a look at the stats here.... Vaccines schedules, autism rates and under 5 mortality.

Health-care reform bill

This is exciting news for the Autism Society and families affected by autism. The new law is a great step towards ensuring that all people with autism have access to health-care. The bill will require coverage for habilitative care as well as behavioral health treatments. Anyone with autism will not be denied health coverage because of their pre-existing condition. To learn more about how this bill impacts families with autism, please click here.

Brain Injury, Vaccines and Autism

Brain injury - for which I believe autism is - does not include autism.  Fact is, if you claim vaccines caused a brain injury, you can sue, but if you claim vaccines caused autism you are immediately thought to be nuts. What is going on here?  Read this article for more details - CLICK HERE

Tired of hearing about "herd immunity"?  Me too.

This is an excellent article against herd immunity - the catch all phrase used to make parents feel guilty if they don't vaccinate on schedule, or at all.  About time someone championed those that were injured by vaccines.

Thimerosol exposure in infants and neurodevelopmental disorders.

From the Journal of Neurological Sciences, this 2008 paper reveals a significant relationship between mercury (Hg) and autism (and other PDDs) by looking at cohorts in the early 1990s. What is really interesting are all the other papers it cites for various scientific studies on the possible link. Hmmm..... 2008 - why did we not get a media blitz?

Stem Cells from Cord Blood - could this be a cure?

Using stem cells obtained from cord blood is just one of the exciting new trials going on in the treatment of autism.  These cells are thought to help the damaged immune system cells and is hoped to result in improvement of brain function in the areas of communication.  This is EXCITING NEWS - read the Groundbreaking Autism Clinical Trial

Scientists make autism breakthrough

he ground-breaking research, done in collaboration with Stanford University in the United States, looked at brain cell communication and genetic mutations in people with autism. The team discovered that autism was caused by mutated brain proteins, called Shank3, weakening communication between brain cells.  Read the article - Scientists make autism breakthrough.
